Recruiting Calendar for College Football Prostpects

SPRING: April – May

 Visit high school and recruiting fairs – one academic / one athletic

  1. gather academic and personal background
  2. watch film, individual workout, and spring athletic competition
  3. one permissible phone call during this period

 Distribution of information to prospect

  1. personal questionnaire
  2. camp information
  3. university propaganda

 Complete a “Top Prospect” list

  1. academic qualifier
  2. athletic talent
  3. “fit” the needs

 Develop a strategy

  1. get the prospect on campus – football camp, summer recruit day
  2. communicate with high school coach
  3. potentially extend an “early offer”

 SUMMER: June – July

 Host / work as many football camps as possible
  1. begin a relationship with prospects
  2. evaluate talent of pre-determined prospects
  3. identify new prospects

 Update and reduce “Top Prospect” list

  1. determine academic standing after six semesters
  2. personal evaluation of talent
  3. assessment of individual character

 FALL: August – November

 Visit high schools for confirmation of “Top Prospects”

  1. gather updated academic and personal information
  2. focus on current prospects: watch film, attend practice, attend game
  3. begin to identify top underclassmen

 Build a personal relationship with “Top Prospects”

  1. unlimited letters and handwritten notes
  2. one phone call per week
  3. invite prospect to campus for a game visit

 WINTER: December – February

Begin to “close the deal” on “Top Prospects”

  1. make off-campus contact with prospects (1 per week / maximum 6 allowed)
  2. secure an “official visit” date to campus
  3. secure a “verbal commitment”

 Identify top underclassmen prospects

  1. every All-Conference, All-District, All-State underclassman on mailing list
  2. evaluate film, individual workout, and winter athletic competition
  3. gather academic and personal background information

 Host / speak / attend as many coaching clinics as possible

  1. develop relationships with high school coaches
  2. compile an initial list of underclassmen prospects
  3. compare notes with other recruiting services

 NATIONAL SIGNING DATE: First Wednesday in February

 Secure your signing class

  1. continue to monitor academic progress
  2. continue to build a personal relationship with the signee
  3. determine if team “needs” were met with the signing class

 EARLY SPRING: February – April

 “Beat the Bushes”

  1. continue the coaching clinic circuit
  2. continue to gather potential underclassmen
  3. utilize personal contacts, recruiting services, etc.

 Identify prospect list

  1. request film and player information from high school coach
  2. request unofficial high school transcript from guidance counselor
  3. send a personal questionnaire to identified prospects

 Compile a “Top Prospect – Early Offer” list

  1. confirm academic qualifications
  2. confirm athletic / football talent
  3. confirm personal character with high school coach and staff

 Develop a spring evaluation – visit plan

  1. mandatory visit to school of “Top Prospects”
  2. secure a spring sport schedule from high school athletic department
  3. write and inform “Top Prospects” when you will evaluate them
